The Reward

of Simple Service

Matthew 10:42

And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is My disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.

Daily Steps

This verse provides immense encouragement to the new believer who may feel their contributions to the Call to Mission are too small or insignificant. Jesus confirms that service is measured not by its grand scale, but by the sincere love and intention behind the action: even the simplest act will be noticed and rewarded.

The peace in this principle is found in valued contribution:

  1. The Simplicity of the Act: The example is deliberately simple: giving even a cup of cold water. This emphasizes that Christian service (Day 280) is not reserved for the spiritually elite or those with large resources. Every believer, regardless of their status or gifts, can provide basic, practical help.

  2. The Identity of the Receiver: The act is directed toward one of these little ones who is My disciple. This refers to those who are doing the difficult work of the mission—Christ's messengers and the vulnerable people they serve. Jesus declares that serving them is equivalent to serving Him directly (The Ultimate Presence, Day 212).

  3. The Certainty of the Reward: The promise is absolute: that person will certainly not lose their reward. This guarantees that all acts of humility and love done in Christ's name are seen and valued by God. This certain eternal reward (Day 242) motivates us to serve one another humbly in love and to reject the temptation to only value grand, visible achievements.

Your peace is secured by valued contribution. Embrace the Practice of Service today by committing to the small, humble acts of love and practical help—the cup of cold water—knowing that even the simplest act on behalf of Christ's disciples will certainly bring a divine reward.

Reflective Question

What is one "cup of cold water"—a very small, practical act of service—that you have been neglecting because you felt it was too insignificant? How does the promise of a certain reward motivate you to prioritize this simple act today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess my tendency to measure my contributions by their size. I thank You that You notice and value the simplest acts of love. I pray for the humility to perform the smallest duties with the greatest sincerity. Secure my peace today in the certainty that I will not lose my reward for giving even a cup of cold water in the name of your disciples. Amen.
