The Beginning
of Wisdom
Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Daily Steps
Having focused on the action-oriented life of Mission (Day 285), the new believer must now turn to the source of guidance for how to live and serve effectively: Wisdom. This verse provides the absolute starting point for all true spiritual understanding: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
The peace in this principle is found in reverent awe:
The Starting Point: Fear of the Lord: The fear of the Lord is not terror, but profound, reverent awe and respect for God's authority (Day 273), holiness (Day 251), and Sovereignty (Day 219). This respectful attitude is the essential foundation because it makes us receptive to His Word (Day 269) and obedient to His will (Day 250). Without this awe, we seek our own selfish guidance.
The Definition of Wisdom: True wisdom is not simply accumulated facts (knowledge); it is the skill of living life successfully according to God's perspective. When we start with the fear of the Lord, we begin to gain the spiritual understanding needed to make righteous (Day 268) choices daily.
The Result is Understanding: The outcome of knowing God (knowledge of the Holy One) is understanding. This refers to discernment—the ability to grasp the underlying truth and make clear judgments. This discernment secures our peace (Day 222) by helping us navigate a confusing world.
Your peace is secured by reverent awe. Embrace the Wisdom of God today by cultivating the fear of the Lord, knowing that this humble starting point is the only way to gain understanding and live a life of purposeful action (Day 274).
Reflective Question
If the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, what part of your daily life (e.g., your speech, your finances, your relationships) is currently lacking wisdom because you have lost your reverent awe for God? What is one way you can restore that sense of awe today?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess my tendency to rely on worldly knowledge instead of Your truth. I thank You that The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. I pray that You would instill in me a deep reverent awe and respect for Your holiness. Secure my peace today, as I seek knowledge of the Holy One so that I may gain true understanding and live wisely. Amen.
