The Imperishable
and the Spiritual
1 Corinthians 15:42-44
So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.
Daily Steps
To fully grasp the glory of our future life (Day 302), this passage clearly contrasts our current body with our future, resurrected body. It defines the four dramatic changes that occur in the transformation: from perishable to imperishable, from dishonor to glory, from weakness to power, and from natural to spiritual.
The peace in this principle is found in destined perfection:
From Perishable to Imperishable: Our current body is perishable—subject to decay, disease, and death. The resurrected body is imperishable—it will last forever, securing our eternal peace (Day 295). This affirms the final victory (Day 302) over death's effects.
From Dishonor to Glory: Our current body is affected by sin and shame (dishonor). The future body is raised in glory, reflecting the perfect nature of Christ (Day 301). All blemishes, weaknesses, and effects of sin will be erased, leading to ultimate righteousness (Day 224).
From Weakness to Power: Our present body is weak—it tires, breaks down, and limits our spiritual efforts. The resurrected body is raised in power, enabling us to serve and worship God with unending energy and capacity for purposeful action (Day 274).
From Natural to Spiritual: The final distinction is that the body is raised a spiritual body. This means it will be perfectly responsive to the Holy Spirit (Day 279) and eternal realities, no longer dominated by earthly, natural desires (Day 260) or the pull of the flesh.
Your peace is secured by destined perfection. Embrace the Hope of the Resurrection today by focusing on the perfection that awaits you. Look past the limitations of your current body, knowing that Christ guarantees a magnificent upgrade that will be imperishable, glorious, and powerful.
Reflective Question
Which of the four contrasts (perishable/imperishable; dishonor/glory; weakness/power; natural/spiritual) do you find most encouraging right now? How can the promise of a spiritual body help you commit more fully to the spiritual disciplines (e.g., prayer, study) today?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess my frustration with the limitations of my present body. I thank You that the body that is sown will be raised imperishable, in glory, and in power. I pray for the faith and wisdom to live as if I already possess that spiritual body—fully dedicated to You. Secure my peace today in this destined perfection and the magnificent Hope of the Resurrection. Amen.
