Being Ready
for the Master
Luke 12:35-36
“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.”
Daily Steps
Living with eternal purpose means living in a state of readiness. Jesus uses this vivid illustration to teach the new believer how to find peace in anticipating His return: be ready for the Master.
The peace in this readiness is found in its simplicity:
Dressed for Service: "Be dressed ready for service." This means remaining actively engaged in the work Christ gave you to do. You are not meant to sit idle in anxious anticipation, but to be found busy with tasks of love, mission, and duty.
Lamps Burning: "Keep your lamps burning." This speaks of spiritual vitality—ensuring your faith is active, your relationship with God is strong, and your witness (your "light") is shining brightly.
Immediate Response: The goal is to "immediately open the door for him" when He comes. No frantic preparation, no rushing to clean up—just an immediate, peace-filled welcome.
Your peace about the future is secured not by predicting the timing of Christ's return, but by choosing to live today with active service and spiritual vitality.
Reflective Question
If Christ were to return today, what "service" would He find you dressed for, and is your spiritual "lamp" burning brightly? How can you increase your focus on one of these areas to live with greater purpose and peace?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the certainty of Your return. I confess my tendency toward idleness and distraction. Help me to live with eternal purpose today: to be dressed ready for service and to keep my lamp burning brightly. May the peace of knowing I am doing Your will give me confident anticipation for the day You come and knock. Amen.
