The Light
of the World
Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Daily Steps
The final piece of finding peace in your purpose is understanding that your unique value is meant to be visible and influential. For a new believer, this can feel intimidating, but Jesus commands it with confidence: "You are the light of the world."
This is not a suggestion; it is a declaration of your identity and your purpose:
Identity: You are the light. Because Christ, the true Light, lives in you, you carry His illumination. This is a truth of being, not just doing.
Purpose: The purpose of light is to shine, not to be hidden under a basket. Your good works—which flow naturally from your secure identity—are meant to be seen.
The peace comes from knowing that when you live authentically in your new identity, you are fulfilling your purpose, and the result is that others will "give glory to your Father." You don't have to seek your own glory; your purpose is simply to shine brightly for His.
Reflective Question
What is one way you are currently "hiding your light" (perhaps through timidity, fear of judgment, or self-doubt)? How can you intentionally let that light shine before others today?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for declaring that I am the light of the world in Christ. Forgive me for hiding the unique value and purpose You have given me.
I ask for the courage to let my light shine today through my words and my good works, so that You receive all the glory.
May the peace of fulfilling my purpose secure my identity. Amen.
