Released
from the Old Self
Romans 6:6-7
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.
Daily Steps
When you become a Christian, you don't just add Jesus to your old life; your old life is actually ended.
This powerful scripture explains that through your faith in Christ, your "old self"—the part of you ruled by sin, bad habits, and destructive thought patterns—was crucified with Jesus. It's a completed action, not something you have to work toward.
The result is radical freedom: you are no longer a slave to sin. This doesn't mean you will never struggle, but it means that sin no longer holds authority over you.
You are free from the power and the penalty of it. If you are struggling with a persistent habit or a feeling of worthlessness based on past actions, remember this truth: the old you is dead, and the new you, anchored in Christ, is free.
You have the power of the Holy Spirit to walk away from those old chains because your identity is now defined by your union with Christ.
Reflective Question
What is one old habit or harmful thought pattern you have been allowing to define you? How can you mentally acknowledge that the old self is "crucified" and choose to walk in your new freedom today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the incredible truth that my old self is dead and I am set free from the slavery of sin.
Forgive me for sometimes living as if I am still bound. Today, I choose to believe in the finished work of the cross.
Help me to walk in the freedom of my new identity in You. Amen.
