The Humble
Receive Grace
James 4:6
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
Daily Steps
A common barrier to inner peace is the pride that prevents us from seeking help from God and others. This verse provides the new believer with the path to receiving divine aid and wisdom (Day 180): God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.
The peace in this truth is found in posture:
The Divine Opposition: "God opposes the proud." Pride is the essence of earthly wisdom (Day 181)—it is self-reliance and the refusal to submit to God's authority (The Fear of the Lord, Day 182). This opposition ensures a life of conflict and lack of peace.
The Promise of Favor (Grace): Conversely, God "shows favor to the humble." Grace is God's unmerited, powerful assistance. Humility is the spiritual posture that acknowledges dependence on God. When you humble yourself, you place yourself directly in the path of God's abundant provision and help.
The Result is Tranquility: True peace is found in knowing that your struggles are shared with an infinite, loving God. When you stop striving in your own strength (pride) and acknowledge your need (humility), you receive more grace, which provides the strength, wisdom, and tranquility you need to overcome conflict in the unseen world.
Your peace in the unseen world is secured by humility. By choosing to walk humbly with your God, you receive the necessary grace to overcome opposition and live in divine favor.
Reflective Question
In what current challenge are you feeling exhausted or frustrated because you've been trying to handle it in your own strength (pride)? What specific action of humility (confession, asking for help, or simple surrender) can you take today to receive more grace?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess the pride in my heart that leads me to try to control situations and rely on my own limited strength. I pray for the courage to surrender my pride and choose humility.
I rest in the truth that God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Grant me more grace today, that I may overcome my challenges with Your help and secure my peace. Amen.
