Laying Up

Treasures in Heaven

Matthew 6:19-21

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Daily Steps

The anxiety surrounding possessions often comes from investing our deepest value in things that can easily be lost. Jesus provides the new believer with the ultimate strategy for financial peace: change your storage location.

The peace in this instruction is found in the certainty of the eternal:

  1. The Insecurity of Earthly Wealth: Earthly treasures—money, houses, luxury items—are inherently insecure. They are vulnerable to natural decay (moths and vermin) and human attack (thieves). Investing your heart here is a recipe for anxiety and inevitable loss.

  2. The Security of Heavenly Wealth: The command is to "store up for yourselves treasures in heaven." This is not about saving money; it's about investing your life, time, and resources into things that have eternal value: ministry, evangelism, feeding the poor, and spiritual growth. This treasure is completely secure.

  3. The Result is a Peaceful Heart: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." If your treasure is on earth, your heart will be tied to constant worry about its protection. If your treasure is in heaven, your heart will be secure, focused on eternal value, and free from materialism.

Your financial peace is secured by eternal prioritization. Choose to lay up treasures in heaven, and your heart will be rooted in the secure, unshakeable reality of God's Kingdom.

Reflective Question

If you could instantly transfer one major earthly possession you worry about into a treasure in heaven, what would it be? What small, daily act of stewardship can you commit to today that is an intentional investment in your heavenly account?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I confess my tendency to worry about my possessions and to chase after the fleeting treasures on earth. I pray for the wisdom to see with eternal eyes.

Help me to store up treasures in heaven through generous giving and faithful stewardship. May my heart follow my treasure, securing my ultimate peace in the unshakeable reality of Your Kingdom. Amen.
