Pray for
Your Leaders
1 Timothy 2:1-2
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
Daily Steps
A critical way for the new believer to engage with governing authorities—and secure personal peace—is through active prayer. This passage provides a clear command: pray for your leaders.
The peace in this practice is found in divine intervention:
The Priority of Prayer: The instruction to make "petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving" is placed "first of all." Prayer for leaders is not a suggestion but a primary act of Christian service and submission (Day 170). This spiritual discipline is more effective than complaint or criticism.
The Subjects of Prayer: We are to pray for "kings and all those in authority," meaning every level of government, regardless of their political alignment or moral character. This is a command to pray for all, not just those we agree with.
The Purpose of Prayer: The ultimate goal is profoundly practical: "that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness." By praying for civil stability and just governance, we are ensuring an environment that is conducive to following Christ without fear or unnecessary turmoil. This secures communal and personal peace.
Your peace in the world is secured by intentional prayer. By praying for your leaders, you participate in God's plan for order and enable yourself to live in holiness and stability.
Reflective Question
When you think of your governing leaders, is your first instinct to criticize or to pray? What is one specific, simple petition or act of thanksgiving can you offer for one of your leaders today, focusing on the goal of a peaceful and quiet life?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess my quickness to complain about those in authority. I pray for the discipline to obey Your command. I offer petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving for all those in authority today.
Grant them wisdom and integrity, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness, and secure my personal peace through this act of submission. Amen.
