The Ultimate
Reward
1 Corinthians 3:12-14
If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, the work of each builder will be shown for what it is. . . . If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.
Daily Steps
Finding true peace about the future means understanding that your life today has eternal significance. This passage introduces the new believer to the concept of ultimate reward—a future judgment not for salvation (which is secured by Christ), but for the quality of your work since salvation.
The peace in this principle is a call to purposeful living:
The Foundation is Christ: Your work must be built on the secure foundation of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11).
The Materials Matter: Your daily activities are metaphorically either gold, silver, costly stones (things done for God's glory, driven by faith and eternal purpose) or wood, hay, or straw (things done for selfish gain, temporary pleasure, or vain ambition).
The Reward is for Quality: The time will come when the quality of your work will be tested by fire. If your work survives (the gold, silver, and stones), "the builder will receive a reward."
Focusing on building with "costly stones" today—investing in eternal things like service, love, and truth—removes the anxiety of wasting your life. You secure your future peace by dedicating your present actions to a lasting, ultimate reward.
Reflective Question
What is one activity you spend time on this week that feels like "wood, hay, or straw" (temporary and unrewarding)? How can you replace that activity with something that feels like "gold" (done for an eternal purpose)?
Prayer
Lord, I thank You that my salvation is secure in Christ, the unshakable foundation. I pray for the wisdom to build my life with eternal purpose. Help me to use my time and talents to produce gold, silver, and costly stones. May the certainty of the ultimate reward bring me deep peace and focus as I live for Your glory today. Amen.
