Washing
feet
John 13:14-15
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Daily Steps
The pinnacle of securing peace in relationships is found in Christ's ultimate example of humility and service. The act of washing feet provides the new believer with a powerful, physical metaphor for the kind of self-lowering required to maintain harmony.
The peace in this act is rooted in imitation and lowering self:
The Supreme Example: Jesus, the Lord and Teacher, performed the lowliest task—one reserved for the house servant. He did this to demonstrate that service is not beneath anyone, regardless of their status or authority. Peace begins when you release the need for rank or privilege.
The Direct Command: Jesus states, "you also should wash one another’s feet." This is a command to imitate His action, meaning you must choose the path of lowliness, even when it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or seemingly beneath you.
The Result is Unity: When every person in a relationship or community is focused on out-serving one another, the natural byproduct is profound peace and unity. When people are seeking to elevate others rather than themselves, conflict is eliminated.
Your relational peace is secured by embracing the humility of service. Choosing to wash feet—to do the difficult, unglamorous, or inconvenient work for others—is the most direct way to embody Christ and secure harmony.
Reflective Question
What is the "lowly" task or inconvenient chore in a relationship that you usually avoid or feel is beneath you? How can you purposefully wash that person’s feet today by taking on that specific service to secure peace and imitate Christ?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess my pride that often makes me resistant to true service. I thank You for setting the ultimate example of humility by washing feet. Give me the strength to follow Your command today. Help me to choose the lowliest path and serve others selflessly, so that my life may reflect Your example and secure true peace in my relationships. Amen.
