Submission to
Governing Authorities
Romans 13:1-2
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves
Daily Steps
As the salt of the earth and the light of the world (Day 332), the new believer must understand their specific responsibility regarding the secular world: our duty to submit to governing authorities. This profound truth ensures that Christian living is characterized by respect for order and law, recognizing that all legitimate authority (Day 273) ultimately flows from God.
The peace in this principle is found in respecting order:
The Mandate for Submission: The command is simple and comprehensive: Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities. This means respecting the laws, leaders, and structures of the government under which we live, regardless of our personal political opinion. This is a primary expression of good deeds (Day 331).
The Divine Source of Authority: The reason for this submission is theological: for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Even imperfect governments are allowed and established by God to maintain a degree of order and prevent total disorder (Day 290).
The Danger of Rebellion: The warning is serious: whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted. Rebelling against human authority, when it does not require us to violate God's direct command, is seen as rebellion against God Himself. This underscores the importance of resolute obedience (Day 283) in all aspects of life.
Your peace is secured by respecting order. Embrace Christian Living and the World today by committing to be the best citizen you can be. Pray for your leaders, obey the laws, and express your civic duties with integrity (Day 294), knowing you are submitting to a system that God has established.
Reflective Question
Is there a current law or government leader that you struggle to respect or submit to? How can you apply the truth that there is no authority except that which God has established to your attitude and actions toward that person or law today?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I confess my temptation to complain about and rebel against the governing authorities in my life. I thank You that You are sovereign and that You have established all authority. I pray for the grace to be subject to my leaders, not out of fear, but out of resolute obedience to Your Word. Secure my peace today in respecting order, and help me to live a life of good deeds in the world. Amen.
