The Abundance
of Provision
Luke 6:38
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
Daily Steps
This powerful promise from Jesus serves as the ultimate motivation for generosity (Day 244). It assures the new believer that God not only rewards giving but does so with extravagant abundance. The law of divine reciprocity is simple: Give, and it will be given to you.
The peace in this principle is found in guaranteed overflow:
The Divine Command and Promise: The command is direct: Give. The promise is equally direct: and it will be given to you. This establishes a spiritual law of sowing and reaping, where the act of releasing control and trusting God's provision (Day 243) is met with His guaranteed return.
The Extravagant Measure: God's return is described using the imagery of a merchant filling a container for grain—not just full, but a good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. This imagery signifies an overwhelming, overflowing, and lavish return that exceeds all human expectation. It is a provision far beyond just what is needed.
The Principle of Reciprocity: The final, sobering caution is given: For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. This confirms that the attitude and scale of our generosity directly influence the scale of the abundance we receive. A small, reluctant measure yields a small return; a large, cheerful measure yields an overflowing one.
Your peace is secured by God's abundance. Practice generosity with an open hand, knowing that the Lord promises to return your giving with an extravagant measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over—securing your future provision and peace.
Reflective Question: In what area of your life do you need to start giving more freely to experience the promise of the overflowing return? How does the image of God pouring a measure... running over into your lap remove the fear that you will run out?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I praise You for Your extravagant nature and Your desire to bless me with abundance. I pray for the faith to give freely, not with a small measure, but with open hands and a cheerful heart. I pray for Your promise to be true in my life, that a good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, would be poured into my life. Secure my peace today in Your guaranteed provision. Amen.
