The Power of

Agreement

Matthew 18:19-20

“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

Daily Steps

Having established the necessity of individual faith (Day 254), this passage introduces the tremendous power of corporate prayer. Jesus promises that when believers pray in harmony, their requests are met with special attention: if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them.

The peace in this principle is found in spiritual harmony:

  1. The Condition of Agreement: The core promise relies on agreement in prayer. This is not merely saying the same words, but a spiritual harmony and unity of purpose (Interceding for the Church, Day 253). When believers set aside pride and differences (The Discipline of the Tongue, Day 237) and genuinely align their hearts with God's will (Day 250), their requests are prioritized.

  2. The Guaranteed Answer: Jesus emphatically states that when believers agree about a request, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. This is an extraordinary assurance, reinforcing the truth that unified faith (Day 254) in prayer unlocks the resources of God's power and provision (Day 245).

  3. The Reason for the Power: The reason for this power is the presence of Christ Himself: For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Corporate prayer is powerful because it guarantees the immediate, active presence of Jesus (The Ultimate Presence, Day 212) in the gathering, empowering their requests.

Your peace is secured by spiritual harmony. Embrace the Discipline of Prayer by seeking faithful, humble agreement with other believers, knowing that the power of agreement guarantees Christ's presence and the certain answer of your Father in heaven.

Reflective Question

Is there a specific burden or request you are currently struggling to pray for alone? Who is one believer you can humbly ask today to agree with you in prayer, trusting in the power of agreement that Jesus promises?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the incredible power You grant to agreement in prayer. I confess my tendency to pray in isolation. I pray for the humility and sincere love to find believers with whom I can truly agree in purpose and faith. Secure my peace today in the certainty that when we gather in Your name, You are with us and will answer our united request. Amen.
