Joy as the
Witness of Salvation
Romans 14:17
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Daily Steps
This verse provides the new believer with a clear definition of the true nature of the kingdom of God. It affirms that spiritual life is not defined by outward rules or rituals, but by the internal, verifiable results of the Holy Spirit's work: righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
The peace in this principle is found in spiritual reality:
The Nature of the Kingdom: The Kingdom of God—God's active rule—is not about physical rules or restrictions, described here as not a matter of eating and drinking. This removes the focus from external religious performance (Day 252) and anchors it in the inner life of the believer.
The Threefold Witness: The Kingdom is made real in the believer's life through three foundational spiritual realities: righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Righteousness (Day 224): Right standing with God through Christ.
Peace (Day 222): A deep internal tranquility regardless of circumstances (The Discipline of the Tongue, Day 237).
Joy (Day 267): The supernatural delight that comes from being filled with joy in His presence (Day 263).
The Result is Evidence: These three qualities—righteousness, peace and joy—serve as the tangible fruit of the Spirit (Day 267) and the powerful witness to the surrounding world that the believer is truly saved and living under the rule of God. This secure, internal reality is the basis of lasting happiness.
Your peace is secured by spiritual reality. Embrace the truth that the kingdom of God is within you, evidenced by righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, and allow this inner spiritual vitality (Day 261) to be your clear witness to the world.
Reflective Question
If your joy is a primary witness to the kingdom of God, how clearly does your current level of peace and joy testify to the reality of Christ's rule in your life? What external ritual or focus are you perhaps relying on instead of the power of the Holy Spirit?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess my tendency to seek external validation for my faith. I thank You that the kingdom of God is a matter of righteousness, peace and joy within me. I pray that the Holy Spirit would constantly increase this fruit in my life, so that I may be a strong witness to Your saving power. Secure my peace today in the unshakeable spiritual reality of Your presence. Amen.
