The Value

of Diligence

Proverbs 13:4

A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are satisfied.

Daily Steps

Having learned the wisdom of self-control (Day 238), the new believer must apply that discipline to the essential area of work and personal responsibility. This verse introduces the concept of diligence as the key to a fulfilled life, contrasting it sharply with the spirit of laziness: the desires of the diligent are satisfied.

The peace in this principle is found in personal effort:

  1. The Folly of Laziness: A sluggard (a lazy, habitually idle person) is characterized by an appetite that is never filled. Laziness creates chronic dissatisfaction and prevents the enjoyment of life (The Unseen World, Day 190). The sluggard fails to put in the effort required for genuine achievement or provision (Day 149).

  2. The Reward of Effort: In sharp contrast, the desires of the diligent are satisfied. Diligence is sustained, careful, and conscientious effort. It is the wisdom to work hard, knowing that God blesses the work of your hands. This effort brings both earthly provision and the deep, quiet satisfaction of knowing you have done your part.

  3. The Result is Contentment: The diligent person finds contentment because their work reflects the fear of the Lord (Day 234) and their spiritual peace allows them to appreciate the fruit of their labor. Contentment is secured not through ease, but through purpose-filled work.

Your peace is secured by diligence. Reject the spirit of the sluggard and embrace the wisdom of consistent effort, knowing that the desires of the diligent are satisfied, bringing fulfillment and provision to your life.

Reflective Question

In what area of your life (e.g., job, spiritual growth, relationships) have you recently acted as a sluggard, leaving your appetite... never filled? What is one small, diligent step you can take today to move toward satisfaction?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess my tendency toward idleness and the dissatisfaction it brings. I pray for the gift of diligence—the spiritual and mental discipline to work hard and consistently.

Help me to reject the appetite of the sluggard. Secure my peace today in the satisfaction that comes from using the gifts and opportunities You have given me with wisdom and focused effort. Amen.
