The Measure

of Love

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Daily Steps

When you are searching for proof of your worth, you don't need to look at a mirror or at your accomplishments; you need to look at the cross. This verse gives us the ultimate measure of God's love for you, defining it as the greatest possible sacrifice.

Jesus Christ did not offer His life for you when you were already perfect or performing well. He offered it while you were still a sinner (Romans 5:8). The act of laying down His life permanently establishes your value. The price paid for your life, your forgiveness, and your identity is the measure of the love you are currently receiving.

The peace of a secure identity comes when you stop trying to add to this measure. You cannot make Christ's sacrifice more valuable by trying harder, nor can you make it less valuable by failing. Your worth is fixed, defined by the greatest act of love ever performed. Rest in the knowledge that you are a person for whom Christ willingly laid down His life.

Reflective Question

If you truly accept that Christ laid down His life for you, what is the immediate, most powerful feeling that brings you? How can you use this truth to quiet a lie about your worth today?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for laying down Your life for me. I recognize this as the greatest possible measure of love. Forgive me for doubting my worth when You have paid the ultimate price. Help me to quiet the lies of the enemy and find my complete identity and perfect peace in the magnitude of Your sacrificial love. Amen.
