The Will of God

in All Things

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Daily Steps

The command to "Give thanks in all circumstances" is one of the most difficult—and yet most powerful—ways to find peace and defeat worry. Control-seeking anxiety thrives on focusing on what is missing, what is wrong, or what might go wrong next. Gratitude flips that script entirely.

Notice the verse doesn't say "give thanks for all circumstances," but "give thanks in all circumstances." This distinction is critical. We don't have to thank God for pain or injustice, but we can thank Him in the midst of it for His presence, His faithfulness, and His ultimate control.

The motivation for this radical act of thankfulness is that it is "God's will for you in Christ Jesus." This means that choosing gratitude is an act of obedience and faith that aligns your heart with God's purpose.

When worry tries to take over, an intentional moment of thanksgiving immediately displaces the anxiety and restores peace. It is the shortest route from panic to peace.

Reflective Question

What "circumstance" are you currently facing that is making it difficult to feel grateful? What is one specific, unchanging truth about God (His love, His power, His provision) that you can thank Him for in that situation today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess my tendency to complain when I feel anxious. Thank You for the command to give thanks in all things, knowing it is Your will for my life.

Today, I intentionally choose gratitude. Help me to focus on Your faithfulness rather than my fears, and restore Your peace to my heart. Amen.
