Do Not Be
Conformed
Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Daily Steps
Finding peace in a secular world requires maintaining a distinct identity and direction. This verse provides the new believer with the essential instruction for holiness and peace: Do not conform to the pattern of this world.
The peace in this instruction is found in transformation:
The Negative Command: We are warned against allowing the world's culture, values, priorities (such as materialism or the pursuit of power), and behaviors to shape us (Do not conform). Conforming to the world leads to anxiety because the world is constantly changing and never satisfies.
The Positive Command: Instead of being conformed, we must "be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Transformation is a dynamic, ongoing process powered by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. This renewing of the mind (Day 114) aligns your thinking with God's truth, which is the foundation of true peace.
The Result is Clarity: When your mind is renewed, you gain the ability to "test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Peace comes from knowing that you are walking in God's perfect plan, rather than being tossed around by the confusing, conflicting demands of the world.
Your peace in the world is secured by spiritual transformation. By refusing to adopt the world's patterns, you maintain your distinct holiness and secure the clarity of God's perfect will for your life.
Reflective Question
What is one specific pattern of this world (e.g., a form of entertainment, a financial value, or a critical attitude) that you feel yourself starting to conform to? How can you purposefully expose that area to the Word of God today to begin the renewing of your mind?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess my weakness in sometimes succumbing to the pressures of the world. I pray for the strength to not conform to the pattern of this world.
I ask that you transform me by the renewing of my mind through Your Word. Secure my peace today by giving me clarity to test and approve Your good, pleasing, and perfect will. Amen.
