Be Ready to

Give an Answer

1 Peter 3:15

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

Daily Steps

Interacting with a curious or critical world can be intimidating, leading to a loss of peace and withdrawal. This verse provides the new believer with the essential instruction for peaceful witness: Always be prepared to give an answer for your faith.

The peace in this practice is found in readiness and attitude:

  1. The Heart's Preparation: The foundation of effective witness is internal: "in your hearts revere Christ as Lord." When Christ is supreme in your life, your external actions and words flow from a place of secure devotion, not anxiety or defensiveness.

  2. The Command to Be Ready: The instruction is to "Always be prepared to give an answer (apologia) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." This does not require a seminary degree, but a readiness to articulate your personal testimony—the reason for your inner peace and hope. Preparation eliminates panic.

  3. The Command for Attitude: The witness must be delivered "with gentleness and respect." The manner in which you speak is as important as the message itself. Maintaining a humble and respectful demeanor (Day 137) keeps your heart peaceful and honors both the person you are speaking to and the God you represent.

Your peace in the world is secured by prepared reverence. By honoring Christ as Lord and coupling your readiness to share your hope with gentleness and respect, you fulfill your mission peacefully.

Reflective Question

If someone asked you today, "Why do you have peace (or hope) in your life?" would you be prepared to give an answer? What is the one key part of your story you need to practice articulating with gentleness and respect?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess my fear and unpreparedness when asked about my faith. I pray for the courage to revere Christ as Lord in my heart. Help me to always be prepared to give an answer for the hope that I have, and to do so with gentleness and respect. Secure my peace in fulfilling this mission today. Amen.
