Render to Caesar
and to God
Matthew 22:21
“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Daily Steps
One of the greatest sources of conflict and confusion for the new believer is distinguishing between their duties to the state and their duties to God. Jesus provides the definitive principle for securing peace in this dual citizenship: Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.
The peace in this principle is found in clear division:
The Obligation to the State (Caesar): When Jesus was shown a Roman coin (Caesar's currency), He affirmed the obligation to pay taxes and comply with legitimate governmental requirements (Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's). This aligns with the command to submit to governing authorities (Day 170) and leads to an orderly, peaceful life.
The Ultimate Obligation (God): The far greater command is to "Render to God the things that are God's." Since human beings are created in God's image (His currency), this means the Christian's ultimate allegiance, worship, heart, and life belong entirely to God. This obligation is non-negotiable and transcends all human authority.
The Result is Freedom: This principle frees the conscience. By willingly fulfilling your duties to the state (Justice and Mercy, Day 172) while keeping your ultimate devotion to God, you find a clear path to holiness and peace. You do not need to choose between the two masters, but assign each one what is due, reserving your total service for God (Day 155).
Your peace in the world is secured by proper allegiance. By clearly dividing your obligations, you give the state its due and, more importantly, give God your undivided heart.
Reflective Question
Heavenly Father, I confess my confusion and anxiety in balancing my earthly and heavenly duties. I pray for the clarity to obey Your command: Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.
Grant me the wisdom to be a responsible citizen and the strength to give You my ultimate, undivided allegiance, securing my eternal and present peace. Amen.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess my tendency to favor one requirement over the others—to be either too hard or too permissive. I pray for the wisdom to act justly, the heart to love mercy, and the constant commitment to walk humbly with my God. Secure my peace today by helping me fulfill these requirements that reflect Your good, pleasing, and perfect will. Amen.
