The Peace
of the Gospel
Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Daily Steps
After dealing with internal, relational, financial, and societal conflicts, the new believer finds the ultimate and foundational source of all peace. This verse provides the final, non-negotiable anchor for our soul: we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
The peace in this declaration is found in justification:
The Basis of Peace: Before coming to Christ, humanity was in spiritual conflict with a holy God because of sin. The peace we now possess is not an emotion or a truce; it is a declaration of justification—meaning we have been declared "not guilty" and "righteous" in God's sight. This legal, permanent standing removes the fear of judgment.
The Channel of Peace: This peace is received "through faith." It is not earned by any works of holiness or submission; it is a gift accepted by simple trust in Christ’s finished work on the cross. Your peace is secured by what Jesus did, not by what you do.
The Result is Tranquility: This settled, permanent peace with God becomes the source of all the peace of God (Day 133) we have explored. The greatest relationship is reconciled, meaning the ultimate source of anxiety is eliminated, and you can face the world with profound inner tranquility.
Your ultimate peace is secured by the Gospel. Rest in the profound truth that your relationship with the infinite God is permanently restored, and you have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Reflective Question
If your peace is currently disturbed, is the disturbance coming from a temporary conflict (relationships, finances) or a failure to rest in your ultimate peace with God? How can you purposefully use the truth of your justification through faith to quiet one specific anxiety today?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the ultimate gift of the Gospel. I confess my tendency to forget my ultimate standing with You. I rest today in the profound reality that I have been justified through faith and possess peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Secure my soul in this ultimate truth, allowing this foundational peace to quiet every other anxiety in my life. Amen.
