The Shield

of Faith

Ephesians 6:16

In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

Daily Steps

The most direct attack on the new believer's peace comes from the devil's attempts to inject doubt, fear, and lies. This verse provides the essential defensive weapon for spiritual peace: the shield of faith.

The peace in this defense is found in active belief:

  1. The Nature of the Attack: The enemy uses "flaming arrows." These represent sudden, malicious, and damaging attacks—lies, temptations, accusations, and fear—aimed directly at the heart of your faith and your sense of peace with God (Day 174).

  2. The Defensive Weapon: The "shield of faith" is the active reliance on what God has said (His Word) and what Christ has done (the Gospel). It is not a passive belief but a deliberate choice to trust God's promises—such as He will never leave you (Day 147) or He will meet all your needs (Day 160)—rather than the enemy's lies.

  3. The Guaranteed Defense: The promise is complete: faith "can extinguish all the flaming arrows." No attack is too powerful, too sudden, or too intimidating for the defense of active trust. When faith is active, the devil's power is rendered ineffective (Resist the devil, and he will flee, Day 177).

Your peace in the unseen world is secured by active faith. By consistently holding up the shield of faith and trusting God’s truth, you defeat the lies of the enemy and maintain inner tranquility.

Reflective Question

What "flaming arrow" (a lie of doubt, a fearful thought, or an accusation) did the enemy send your way in the last 24 hours? How can you purposefully lift your shield of faith right now by speaking or reminding yourself of a specific promise from God's Word to extinguish that arrow?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess my tendency to let the enemy’s lies wound my heart and steal my peace. I pray for the spiritual discipline to take up the shield of faith. Help me to actively trust Your Word and Your promises so that I may extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Secure my peace today through confident and active faith. Amen.
