Wisdom

From Above

James 3:17-18

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

Daily Steps

The lack of peace in a new believer's life often stems from making choices based on faulty, earthly advice. This passage provides the essential distinction for inner peace: the clear qualities of wisdom that comes from heaven.

The peace in this wisdom is found in its pure characteristics:

  1. The Priority of Purity: Heavenly wisdom is "first of all pure." It is untainted by selfish motives, pride, or worldly compromise (The Spirit of the World, Day 178). This moral clarity is the bedrock of all subsequent peace.

  2. The Characteristics of Peace: This wisdom produces definitive, relational qualities: peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Notice how this wisdom is focused entirely on maintaining harmony and building up others (mutual edification, Day 165). This is the key to resolving conflicts within the Church and the world.

  3. The Result is Righteousness: The passage culminates in a guarantee: "Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness." By making decisions guided by this heavenly wisdom, you plant seeds of peace that produce the visible fruit of Christ-like living—righteousness. This is the ultimate, tranquil harvest.

Your peace in the unseen world is secured by divine wisdom. By seeking the wisdom that comes from heaven, you align your actions with God's perfect plan and secure a harvest of righteousness and tranquility.

Reflective Question

Reflect on a recent stressful decision you made. Was it characterized by earthly wisdom (selfish, jealous, harsh—James 3:14-16) or the wisdom that comes from heaven (pure, peace-loving, merciful)? How can you intentionally pause before your next decision to ask God for this heavenly wisdom?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess my tendency to rely on my own faulty judgment and the wisdom of the world. I pray for Your wisdom that comes from heaven. Make my heart pure and my actions peace-loving, considerate, and full of mercy. I commit to sowing in peace today, trusting that I will reap a harvest of righteousness and deep tranquility. Amen.
