Seek First
His Kingdom
Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Daily Steps
Worry over necessities (food, clothing, shelter) is a major thief of peace in a new believer's life. Jesus’ teaching provides the radical solution to this anxiety: prioritize God’s purposes, and He will handle your provision. The command is to seek first his kingdom.
The peace in this instruction is rooted in divine priority:
The Correct Focus: The instruction is simple: put God’s agenda (his kingdom) and God’s standards (his righteousness) at the very top of your priority list every day. This means dedicating your time, talent, and resources to eternal purposes.
The Guaranteed Provision: The promise that follows is one of God's most powerful assurances: "and all these things will be given to you as well." "All these things" refers to the necessities Jesus just discussed (what you will eat, drink, or wear, Matthew 6:31). God essentially tells you not to worry about the secondary, because He will provide it when you focus on the primary.
The Result is Trust: Financial anxiety often stems from the fear that we must provide for ourselves. This command frees you from that pressure. Your role is obedience and priority; God's role is provision.
Your financial peace is secured by spiritual prioritization. When you put God first, He takes responsibility for everything else, dissolving your anxiety over lack and securing your trust in His provision.
Reflective Question
If you review your spending of time and money over the last week, what was the one thing you actually sought first? How can you purposefully adjust your priorities today to genuinely seek first his kingdom and rely on His guarantee of provision?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess my anxiety over what I need and my tendency to put my worries before Your will. I pray for the discipline to obey Your command: seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness. I release the burden of providing for myself and choose to trust Your promise that all these things will be given to me as well. Secure my peace in Your perfect provision today. Amen.
