The Fear
of Lack
Hebrews 13:5
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
Daily Steps
The root cause of financial anxiety is often the love of money and the fear of lack. This verse provides the new believer with a dual solution for peace: a command for behavior and a promise for belief, both secured by God's unchanging presence.
The peace in this command is rooted in divine companionship:
The Command to Contentment: We are first commanded to "Keep your lives free from the love of money" and to "be content with what you have." Money is a tool, but the love of it turns it into a cruel master that always demands more, destroying inner peace. Contentment is the spiritual decision to be satisfied with God's present provision.
The Divine Promise: The reason we can be content is the unshakable, threefold promise of God: "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." This is one of the strongest negations in the Greek language, emphasizing the absolute certainty of God's presence and loyal commitment.
The Result is Security: If God is always with you, He will always provide for you (Seek First His Kingdom, Day 146). The fear of being abandoned—and thus facing destitution alone—is replaced by the certainty of His constant provision and companionship.
Your financial peace is secured by the absolute faithfulness of God. When you choose to release the love of money and embrace contentment, you activate the promised security of God's lifelong, unwavering presence.
Reflective Question
What area of your spending or desire is currently motivated by the love of money rather than necessity? How can you replace that desire with contentment today, resting in the specific promise: "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you"?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I confess my anxiety and my temptation to let the love of money motivate me. I pray for the strength to be content with what I have. I stand on Your absolute promise today: Never will You leave me; never will You forsake me. May this certainty of Your presence secure my financial peace and remove the fear of lack. Amen.
