Christ is the
Head of the Church
Colossians 1:18
And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy.
Daily Steps
Having understood the work of the Holy Spirit (Day 321) in the believer's life, the new believer must now grasp their corporate identity in The Church. This verse establishes the fundamental truth that provides all structure and authority (Day 273) for the Christian community: Christ is the head of the body, the church.
The peace in this principle is found in perfect leadership:
The Headship of Christ: Jesus is explicitly named the head of the body, the church. Just as the human head directs all the body’s functions, Christ directs and controls the Church. This secures the Church's integrity (Day 294) and purpose, ensuring its ultimate safety (The Great Deliverance, Day 244).
The Basis for Supremacy: Christ's right to this supremacy is rooted in His Resurrection (the firstborn from among the dead, Day 300). Because He rose physically and triumphed over death, His authority is absolute and universal. This guarantees that His leadership of the Church is invincible and eternal.
The Purpose of Everything: Christ's goal is that in everything He might have the supremacy. This means every function, plan, doctrine, and service (Day 282) within the Church must prioritize the exaltation and obedience of Jesus Christ. Where Christ is truly supreme, there is unity (Day 231) and peace (Day 222).
Your peace is secured by perfect leadership. Embrace the truth today that Christ is the head of the body, the church. Rest in His supremacy and commit to following His direction above all human opinions or programs. Knowing that He is in control brings profound certainty and wisdom (Day 297).
Reflective Question
If Christ is the head of the church, is there any area in your participation in the church where you are prioritizing a human leader's opinion or tradition over Christ's clear Word (Day 269)? How can you submit to His supremacy today?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I confess that I sometimes look to human strength or wisdom instead of Your Son. I thank You that He is the head of the body, the church. I pray for the grace to submit fully to His supremacy in my life and in my fellowship. Secure my peace today in His perfect leadership, and empower me to contribute to the unity of the Church through His power. Amen.
