The Background: Hunger and Doubt in the Desert

The miracle of Manna occurs shortly after the Israelites cross the Red Sea. While they were delivered from Pharaoh, they immediately faced the new challenge of the Wilderness of Sin—a vast, desolate area with no visible source of food.

• The Complaint: The Israelites quickly became hungry and began to complain bitterly against Moses and Aaron, wishing they had died in Egypt where at least they had food (Exodus 16:3). This episode highlights the human tendency to quickly forget God's previous miracles when new needs arise.

• God's Response: God did not condemn their hunger; instead, He promised to provide them with food directly from heaven, saying He would "rain bread from heaven for you." This act was intended to test the people's obedience and to teach them to "walk in my law or not."

I. The Miracle: The Bread of Heaven

The Manna was a supernatural provision that sustained over two million people for forty years in the desert.

• The Appearance: Every morning, after the dew lifted, there was a fine, flaky substance on the ground, described as being like "a fine, flaky thing, like frost on the ground." (Exodus 16:14) The name Manna literally means "What is it?"

• The Rules of Provision: God established clear, simple rules for gathering Manna to build trust and obedience:

  1. Daily Limit: The people were to gather just enough for that day. Any excess would spoil and become wormy.

  2. Sabbath Exception: On the sixth day, they were commanded to gather a double portion, as none would appear on the Sabbath (the seventh day of rest).

• The Character Trait: Daily Reliance: The entire purpose of the Manna was to force the people to rely on God day-by-day. They could not hoard; they could not panic; they simply had to trust that the next morning, God would be faithful again.

II. The Deeper Meaning: Jesus, the True Bread

In the New Testament, Jesus Himself uses the Manna miracle to reveal His own divine identity.

• The Fulfillment: When people asked Jesus for a sign like the Manna, Jesus declared: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)

• Spiritual Sustenance: The Manna gave physical life to Israel for a season; Jesus gives eternal life and is the spiritual sustenance required to live the Christian life. The Manna foreshadowed the ultimate provision of Christ.

Applying the Truth Today

The Manna miracle is a profound lesson in faith and daily dependence for the new Christian. Just as the Israelites could not save up Manna for a week, you cannot save up yesterday's spiritual experience.

You need a fresh supply of God's Word, His presence, and His strength every day. Trust God's promise to provide your needs (Philippians 4:19), and resist the temptation to worry about tomorrow. Focus on receiving your "daily bread" from Him today.
