Our Identity in Christ: Walking Worthy of Our Calling

The Book of Ephesians is one of the four "Prison Epistles" (written while Paul was imprisoned in Rome) and is considered one of the most sublime and profound writings in the Bible. It was written to the church in Ephesus and serves as a comprehensive guide to Christian doctrine (what we believe) and Christian duty (how we live). The central theme is the Church—God's eternal plan to unite all things in heaven and on earth under the headship of Christ.

I. Our Riches and Identity in Christ (Chapters 1–3)

The first half of the letter is primarily focused on doctrine, explaining the immense, undeserved spiritual wealth we possess because of our union with Christ.

  • God's Eternal Purpose: Paul opens with a magnificent prayer of praise, detailing the blessings we have in Christ: election, adoption, redemption, forgiveness, and the indwelling Holy Spirit as the "guarantee" of our inheritance (Ephesians 1:13–14).

  • Salvation by Grace: Paul gives the most famous and clear definition of salvation by grace: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9) Though we were spiritually dead, God made us alive together with Christ.

  • The Mystery of Unity: Paul reveals the great "mystery" of the Gospel: that Gentiles are "fellow heirs" and "fellow members of the body" with Israel. Christ has broken down the spiritual wall of hostility between Jew and Gentile, creating one single, unified Church—the glorious body of Christ.

II. Walking Worthy of Our Calling (Chapters 4–6)

The second half of the letter pivots sharply from doctrine to duty, beginning with the key transition word: “I therefore… walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.” (Ephesians 4:1)

  • Unity and Gifts: Paul urges the believers to maintain the unity of the Spirit through peace. He explains that Christ gave different gifts (apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers) to the Church not for personal status, but to "equip the saints for the work of ministry" (Ephesians 4:12).

  • The New Life: Paul contrasts the "old self" (lying, bitterness, impurity) with the "new self" (truthfulness, kindness, love). We must "be imitators of God" and "walk in love" as Christ loved us.

  • Household and Work: The letter gives practical instructions for Christian living in specific relationships: wives and husbands, children and parents, and slaves and masters, all based on mutual love and submission to Christ.

III. The Final Stand: The Armor of God (Chapter 6)

Paul concludes the letter with a powerful battle command, reminding believers that the Christian life is spiritual warfare.

  • The Spiritual Enemy: Our ultimate struggle is not against other people ("flesh and blood"), but against "the cosmic powers over this present darkness" (Ephesians 6:12).

  • The Complete Armor: To stand firm against the devil’s schemes, we must put on the full armor of God. This armor is not literal but spiritual, covering every aspect of our lives:

“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.” (Ephesians 6:14–15)

The only offensive weapon is the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. The battle is ultimately won through constant prayer in the Spirit.

Applying the Truth Today

Ephesians is a high-altitude view of Christian theology that should fill every believer with gratitude for their unbelievable spiritual inheritance in Christ. It challenges us to "walk worthy" of that identity by prioritizing unity in the Church and living a life of active, ethical righteousness. We are constantly reminded that our battles are spiritual, and our victory is assured only as we rely on the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

Reflection Questions for Your Journey:

  1. Guaranteed Inheritance. How does the Holy Spirit acting as a "guarantee" of your future inheritance change the way you view the temporary difficulties and losses of today?

  2. Walking Worthy. What is one practical change you need to make in your life right now to "put off the old self" and "put on the new self" (Ephesians 4:22–24)?

  3. The Armor of God. Which piece of the Armor of God do you feel you are currently neglecting (e.g., the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith)? How will you intentionally use that piece in your spiritual life this week?
